The Kancha Ilaiah piece talks about how cow worship came about came about as a form of Ahimsa. Beef eaters were threatened and beaten. This has happened to the extent that beef has been banned in the State of Maharashtra. Personally, I am someone who loves beef and banning it in Maharashtra, a state I come from has wreaked havoc. People are smuggling in beef under the guise of it being 'water buffalo'. How is it okay to eat other meats like pork, buffalo etc. but beef eating is regarded unholy because Hindus 'worship' cows? Moreover, the article on live mint on Culinary Apartheid talks about exactly why the Dalit and other lower castes started eating beef. They could not afford other food and would eat the remains of what the upper castes ate. However, somehow the hierarchy of food shows beef eaters as the lowest. At the top are those who do not eat any type of meat, in the middle those who eat meat except beef and the lowest are the beef eaters. But what is not realised is that beef is what these people can afford because its cheap. they do not have the money or resources to afford highly nutritious food. they survive on food like sugar cane, rice made out of corn because thats also they can afford but this is somehow considered 'Dalit Food' when it is all only based on their affordability.
