Suhaas Putta : Week 7

Ambedkar Jayanti, also known as, Bhim Jayanti, isn't a celebration of Ambedkar, it isn't a celebration of his identity, nor is it some commemoration of his work, it is, in my opinion, a piecemeal day. It has a little bit of something for everyone to relate to, the Dalits get a day commemorating, quite possibly, their biggest hero, the government gets to celebrate a founding father of the nation, and everyone else gets something in the middle. The empty gesture is only further personified, when we take a look at what happened around April 14th this year. Anand Teltumbde penned an open letter to the people of India, just before his bail was finally rejected, and he surrendered.

He is an academician, a loving father, and a passionate leader. Yet, the Government is ready to take any measure possible to silence any dissent. Even in these troubling times, while a Pandemic is tearing through countries, and many jails are letting convicts out on bail or into protective custody owing to lack of social distancing opportunities within the confines of a jail, our Government has ramped up the arrests of anyone it sees as a threat. Unfortunately for them, as long as there is free will, people will still think of thoughts that aren't in alignment with them.

Contested Citizenship, Caste, and the Politics of Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’             The CAA-NRC agitations have perhaps reached a tipping point in mainland India. Yet, the contention and agitation has been brewing in Assam for a while now. Until the threat of a nation-wide NRC, it wasn’t even a peripheral topic of discussion. ‘We people’ were largely unfazed by it. However, a brief reading of the recommended articles and a short explanatory video with Ms. Bina Pallical reaffirms my continuous contention with the NRC. Even the ‘Liberals’ comprising mainly of upper-caste educated persons have bought the narrative of it being an exclusively Hindu-Muslim problem. Week 10 - Samyuktha Rao

I'm sharing something interesting that I've come across during my search for dalit music. In the state of telangana, India's largest tribal festival is conducted on an annual basis in the month of February. The festival witnesses largest gathering of dalit communities as the goddess who is worshipped during the festival belongs to the Koya tribe. However, Hinduization of this festival has begun to take place in the last few decades. I'm attaching articles from the wire and feminism in india which talks in detail about how upper castes are controlling the image of the goddess as theirs and their other  other practices of Hinduization that are taking place during the festival.
