Dalit Politics and CAA/NRC

In order to impose CAA/NRC in Assam, the government of Assam started the construction of the detention which is supposed to be equipped with a hospital, an auditorium, a common kitchen and 180 toilets. The officers have claimed that the camps will have regular doors, proper lighting and ventilation. This comes at a time where Indian governments are not able to provide proper housing facilities to its un-controversial citizens. Detention camps at Goalpara district of Assam is supposed to have red wall, reminding us all of Trump’s wall at USA’s Mexican border. This predicts a conscious shift in the politics of India wherein if this continues we will be following USA’s streak in gross violations of Human Rights.

Dalit community’s response to CAA/NRC has been a strong rejection of the law and their rationale behind the same is well supported by the analysis of  BJP’s constant efforts at saffornizing  India. They consider it an anti-dalit legislation. They strongly believe that the influx of ‘minorities’ from the neighbouring countries will reduce the benefits that are accrued to them. They consider state’s response to the uproar against CAA/NRC as ineffective. Additionally they believe this is state instigated violence and the result of the same is not riot but, genocide.    


Dalit communities have deciphered the CAA/NRC quite accurately. It is an attempt by the government to employ majoritarian politics to please their voting banks. The estimate of carrying out this process to its conclusion and the bureaucratic support required for the same is not achievable. This is just a hideous act that is supposed to suppress the voices of the minorities.

Contested Citizenship, Caste, and the Politics of Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’             The CAA-NRC agitations have perhaps reached a tipping point in mainland India. Yet, the contention and agitation has been brewing in Assam for a while now. Until the threat of a nation-wide NRC, it wasn’t even a peripheral topic of discussion. ‘We people’ were largely unfazed by it. However, a brief reading of the recommended articles and a short explanatory video with Ms. Bina Pallical reaffirms my continuous contention with the NRC. Even the ‘Liberals’ comprising mainly of upper-caste educated persons have bought the narrative of it being an exclusively Hindu-Muslim problem. Week 10 - Samyuktha Rao

I'm sharing something interesting that I've come across during my search for dalit music. In the state of telangana, India's largest tribal festival is conducted on an annual basis in the month of February. The festival witnesses largest gathering of dalit communities as the goddess who is worshipped during the festival belongs to the Koya tribe. However, Hinduization of this festival has begun to take place in the last few decades. I'm attaching articles from the wire and feminism in india which talks in detail about how upper castes are controlling the image of the goddess as theirs and their other  other practices of Hinduization that are taking place during the festival.
