Week 2

This week’s readings bring out the marginalized communities’ insecurities rooted in our society because of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and with the construction of huge detention camps. The popular media has portrayed this as a problem of exclusion only for the minority Muslims and as usual has neglected the plight of the other marginalised groups like Dalits and Adivasis. It is shameful that even after gaining independence, discrimination is still so pertinent that it governs how the society should function. With the so called “dominant caste” imposing its ideology. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar rightly called it the division of labourers where the marginalised caste is forced or rather given very little room to break out of this division. As a result they have no lands to their names and even proper documentation as pointed out by Ms Bina Pallikal. Thus this has adversely affected the minority groups. Even Beggars, rag pickers, are being punished with no fault of their own. An article in the Times of India suggests that this is the imposition of Hindutva culture as per the Manusmruti.
            It is truly the times of the Fascist regime with peaceful protestors being arrested and killed, for example- the case of Chandrashekar Azad and with citizens being labelled as doubtful citizens and being denied of their Fundamental Rights such as the right to vote.

Contested Citizenship, Caste, and the Politics of Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’             The CAA-NRC agitations have perhaps reached a tipping point in mainland India. Yet, the contention and agitation has been brewing in Assam for a while now. Until the threat of a nation-wide NRC, it wasn’t even a peripheral topic of discussion. ‘We people’ were largely unfazed by it. However, a brief reading of the recommended articles and a short explanatory video with Ms. Bina Pallical reaffirms my continuous contention with the NRC. Even the ‘Liberals’ comprising mainly of upper-caste educated persons have bought the narrative of it being an exclusively Hindu-Muslim problem. Yet, how is it going to affect the people who have historically never been considered Hindu? The current political narrative is trying to homogenise the ‘Hindi-Hindu-Hindustan’ identity. Week 10 - Samyuktha Rao

I'm sharing something interesting that I've come across during my search for dalit music. In the state of telangana, India's largest tribal festival is conducted on an annual basis in the month of February. The festival witnesses largest gathering of dalit communities as the goddess who is worshipped during the festival belongs to the Koya tribe. However, Hinduization of this festival has begun to take place in the last few decades. I'm attaching articles from the wire and feminism in india which talks in detail about how upper castes are controlling the image of the goddess as theirs and their other  other practices of Hinduization that are taking place during the festival.
